Summary: Clark has a problem keeping track holiday. Lex 'helps' him out.

The kryptonite 'death' ray brings Clark crashing down. Lex's aim is frightening in its accuracy.

Consciousness returns slowly. He doesn't recognize the room, but knows who's behind it. By the time the door swings open, Clark's ready. Or thinks he is.

Then he sees the child in Lex's arms, hears Lex's baby gibberish and decodes it as, 'Daddy's in trouble.'

"You should have returned my calls, Clark." Lex smirks at him. "Given the dearth of positive Luthor family traditions, I thought Connor and I would adapt some from your side of the family. Now wish me a Happy Mother's Day."

"The father of my son is missing," Lex begins. "It's been several days since he's been home," he shares. He smoothes his shirt, feigns distraction. "We miss him."

"What are you up to?" Clark asks.

"Tomorrow is July Fourth. You're going to share the fireworks with your son and I." He taps the door of the kryptonite lined cage. "I thought I'd eliminate all chances of disappointment."

Connor peeks around the door, and Clark dredges up a smile and a wave. The meaning of holidays has changed since Connor was born. He can't remember when that became a good thing.

*

"We have a bit of a problem, Superman."

Lex looks murderous. Clark kicks off from the roof and hovers. Lex's expression darkens even further. Clark knows there is no safe place on Earth, or the solar system, left to him.

"-you missed Connor's," Lex is saying. "You'll be there this time." The holidays are less about him and Lex, as about Connor. And now, apparently, their children..

Clark flies closer. Under the anger, Lex's eyes are tired, uncertain. "I want to be there for the birth," Clark tells him. Lex looks away.

"I didn't want to be alone again," Lex whispers.

New Year's Eve is more than just the dropping of the ball, or at least it is to Clark. Still, if it's the only part of the holiday left to him, he'll take it.

Dirty, ragged, exhausted, he arrives just in time to kiss Lex at midnight. None of the gathered family members mind, though Connor and his uncle Lucas make gagging noises.

It's the first holiday he's managed to make without any 'coaxing' from Lex, and he is well-compensated.

It's enough for him to resolve never to miss another one. Being a family is its own reward, of course.
