Christmas had passed, quietly. It had been a lonely holiday, one spent alone. It had been just another lonely day of what had been a lonely year. Her family was either dead or far away. Clark was gone.
It was New Year’s Eve. Chloe had taken a vacation day, having too many days accumulated. The past year she had wanted to work, hadn’t wanted vacations. Vacations just made her miss Clark, made her miss their time spent together.
She thought of the coming year, the new year. It would be more of the same, more of this quiet, lonely life.

Chloe flipped through the 1013 calendar she had purchased, her calendar for the year about to begin. Flipped through January, February, March, ended up in April. Her fingers traced the box representing Clark’s birth date.
Tears strung her eyes at the thought of Clark. Her mind kept straying to him. She knew training was important, but she missed her best friend. A year had passed and now another was about to begin.
She wanted Clark here with her to celebrate New Years. But he wasn’t and she was alone and she just so was tired being alone and missing him.

New Years’ Eve passed slowly for her.
By ten Chloe was ready to climb into bed and sleep her way into 2013. She held off, not wanting to let the depression capture her too deeply. If she could just fight it long enough, Clark would be back and things would be better.
This was what she told herself, as she sat down on the couch instead of climbing into bed. She turned on the TV, but put it on mute. She thought about her resolutions for 2013.
Find a way to be less lonely, she thought to herself.
Hours passed.

She woke to knocking. She blinked, checked the clock. It was early morning on the first day of the new year.
Another knock. She rose from bed, opened the door.
“Hey,” Clark said.
Chloe stared, in shock, speechless.
“No hug?”
“Oh my god,” she said, “you’re here.”
“I’m back.”
Now she threw her arms around him. It was a tight hug. Then it was over.
“I’m glad you’re here,” she said. They were sitting on the couch.
He nodded. “Just in time for the new year,” he said.
“Must be fate.”
She smiled, he smiled.
It was a new year.
